June 2021: After many years of providing support to melanoma patients and caregivers, the Alberta Society of Melanoma is merging with national organization Save Your Skin Foundation. The highest priority of both organizations has always been to provide support and up-to-date information to melanoma and skin cancer patients and caregivers. As a national, patient-led, not-for-profit organization, SYSF is well positioned to assume responsibility for the services and resources previously offered by ASM to Albertans, and to all Canadians.
“We’ve had a close and special relationship with ASM for many years and I am honoured to have them merge with our foundation,” says Kathy Barnard, President and Founder of Save Your Skin Foundation, and stage IV metastatic melanoma survivor. “Alberta is very near and dear to my heart. When I was first diagnosed with melanoma and was told I had six months to live, it was a clinical trial in Edmonton that saved my life. On a personal level, I’m very excited to be bringing support and resources to Albertans who have been touched by melanoma and skin cancer.”

Patient/Caregiver Support Group Chats – Informal, Private, and Free:
On the first Thursday of every month, Save Your Skin Foundation hosts an evening support chat for patients, survivors and caregivers. These chats are open discussions about life after a cancer diagnosis, including sharing experiences with varied treatment options, managing side effects, emotional and wellness support channels, navigating the health care system, and any other concern that patients and their families may have. It is also a great opportunity to meet other patients and survivors from across Canada.
Anyone can join for free by phone by calling the toll-free number, or by logging in to the online option via computer, tablet or smartphone anywhere wifi is available.
SAVE YOUR SKIN FOUNDATION
Making awareness and education available is crucial. Since 2006, the Foundation has worked to raise awareness of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers focusing on education, prevention and the need for improved patient care.
